TRAVEL TO THE CYCLADES
Your journey begins with a transfer from Athens to Rafina Port, located approximately 30 minutes from Athens International Airport and about 45 minutes from Athens city centre. Regular ferries connect Rafina with Andros throughout the year, with the crossing taking approximately 2 hours.
Upon arrival at Gavrio Port, our team will welcome you and arrange your transfer to your accommodation, ensuring a smooth and relaxing start to your hiking adventure.
CLOTHING AND GEAR
The varied terrain of Andros combines ancient stone footpaths, mountain trails, shaded forests and coastal paths. Sturdy hiking boots with good grip and ankle support are highly recommended for maximum comfort and safety.
Weather conditions can change throughout the day, particularly during spring and autumn. We recommend dressing in layers, including lightweight hiking trousers, breathable shirts, a fleece, and a windproof or waterproof jacket. A small daypack, sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen are essential, while swimwear and lightweight footwear are recommended if you wish to enjoy one of Andros' beautiful beaches after the hikes.
Before your departure, you will receive a detailed packing list specifically prepared for this itinerary. We kindly ask all guests to review it carefully and arrive fully prepared.
ACCOMMODATION
Accommodation on Andros has been carefully selected to combine comfort, authenticity and warm Greek hospitality. Depending on the itinerary, you will stay in charming boutique hotels or traditional guesthouses, many of them family-owned and located in picturesque villages or close to the sea.
All rooms offer private facilities and provide an ideal base for relaxing after each day's hike. Throughout your stay, you will experience the welcoming atmosphere for which Andros is renowned.
Should you have specific accommodation preferences, we will be happy to discuss the available options before your trip.
MEALS
Andros is renowned for its rich culinary tradition, combining fresh local ingredients with authentic Cycladic flavours.
Breakfast is typically served between 7:00 and 9:00 a.m. and includes freshly baked bread, local cheeses, Greek yogurt, seasonal fruit, eggs, honey and freshly brewed coffee or tea.
During the hikes, lunch may be enjoyed at traditional village tavernas or as a picnic in scenic locations along the trail. Evenings are dedicated to discovering the island's excellent cuisine, featuring freshly caught seafood, locally produced cheeses, slow-cooked meats and traditional Andriot specialties, accompanied by fine local wines and genuine Greek hospitality.
SAFETY MATTERS
Our hiking tours are led by professional mountain leaders, each with years of guiding and wilderness experience and with passion for the outdoors. They usually work in the region of the hiking trip, have professional training, are trained for emergency situations, regularly upgrade their qualifications and work in accordance with Greek regulations.
In cases of self-guided hiking, you must be properly dressed, follow the safety rules and make realistic time calculations for daily crossings – preferably according to the hiking guidelines that we provide. Our self-guided hiking trips are organized so that they do not require specific abilities and skills or gear, unless it is clearly specified in the trip description. You can expect not so well maintained trails like the ones in the Alps or in N, Europe or N. America, however, equipped with direction signs. Exposed sections of the paths may not be secured on the self-guided routes. However they are considered safe provided that you follow the basic safety rules for hiking in the islands. We will give you any necessary information.
Island-trails are a natural environment with a high level of risk, so we insistently ask all guests to engage into activities according to skill and fitness level. If you have questions about the safety rules, please contact us.
Although Andros offers one of Greece's finest networks of signposted hiking trails, it remains a genuine mountain environment where weather conditions and terrain require appropriate preparation and responsible decision-making.
INSURANCE
We strongly recommend that all participants obtain comprehensive travel insurance covering hiking activities, medical expenses and trip cancellation.
Although Andros is well connected to mainland Greece, mountain rescue operations are coordinated through the Greek emergency services. While professional assistance is available when required, rescue procedures may not always operate as quickly as in some other European countries. It is important to mention that there is no HEMS in Greece. We mostly depend on the state operated EMAK service (Joint Rescue Coordination Service) which is not as quick and efficient as rescue operations abroad.
WEATHER IN ANDROS
Thanks to its unique geography, Andros enjoys a milder and greener climate than most Cycladic islands. The island offers excellent hiking conditions throughout spring and autumn, when temperatures are pleasant and the landscapes are at their most vibrant.
Typical daytime temperatures range between 15°C and 28°C (59°F - 82°F) depending on the season. During summer, warm temperatures are often moderated by the refreshing Meltemi winds, while evenings can become noticeably cooler, particularly at higher elevations.
As with all mountain environments, weather conditions can change unexpectedly. Before each hiking day, your guide will provide a detailed weather briefing and make any necessary adjustments to the itinerary to ensure the safest and most enjoyable experience.
