Day 1: Arrival in Ioannina City
You will arrive in Ioannina City and check into the hotel. One of the most beautiful Greek cities with a clearly distinct identity, Ioannina is the gateway to the paradise of Epirus mountains. Nested next to a beautiful lake at the foot of Mt Mitsikeli you will visit the lively city and a beautiful historical island on the day of your arrival. We can walk by the lake or get on a boat to the island while enjoying the captivating view of the castle. We will visit the Aslan Pasha mosque and Lake Pamvrotida.
Day 2: Konitsa, Papigo
Ascent 200 m. Descent 165 m. Distance 6 km. Walking time 3 hours.
Transfer to Konitsa (one hour). Konitsa is the head town of the area. The Stone Bridge of Konitsa is a captivating landmark with historical charm. Built in the 19th century, it arches gracefully over the Aoos River, creating a picturesque view ideal for photographers and nature lovers. Approaching the bridge, you’re welcomed by the soothing sounds of the river and lush greenery, a peaceful escape from busier tourist spots. A small distance river trekking or a swimming experience in the river under the bridge is a highly recommended option.
Then we will get a transfer to Voidomatis river (15 minutes). Smaller than the nearby Vikos, Voidomatis gorge offers an amazing hiking experience. You will start at the single-arched stone bridge of Kleidonia. The trail follows the riverbank, revealing stunning views of the transparent-green river, ancient plane-tree forests, monasteries, and caves once used by monks. The hike concludes at Aristi’s bridge, where adventurous hikers can enjoy a refreshing dip in the crystal-clear waters. We will later take a transfer to explore the picturesque villages of Upper and Lower Papigo. We can settle to our hotel*, have dinner, rest, visit the villages or walk to another nearby small canyon, Rogovo, to experience its natural swimming pools.
*Depending on hotel room availability (Papigo is a very small village) we may have to use the facilities of another hotel nearby in the Zagori area.
Day 3: Zagori villages Vitsa, Koukouli, Kipoi
Ascent 290m Descent 490 m. Distance 10 km. Walking time 4-5 hours
Transfer to Vitsa (one hour). Vitsa is one of the largest villages of the central Zagori region, situated at an altitude of 955m on a mountain slope near the Vikos gorge. We will follow a beautiful hiking route in central Zagori whose path passes over the best traditional stone bridges of the region but also over two of the few preserved stone "stairs" of Zagori. The starting point of this route is Vitsa and the ending point is the village Kipoi. The whole route is relatively easy, along its entire length, the path is clearly visible, there is good marking and to complete it an approx 5 hour journey is required. We will have a rest to enjoy local pies at the traditional village of Koukouli and depending on availability, we will visit a Vikos Doctor’s Museum with an amazing collection of herbal medicinal plants. We will finish our hike at Kokori’s stone bridge. Nestled between two steep cliffs below the village of Koukouli, Kokori’s bridge is one of the most scenic stone bridges in Zagori. Originally built in 1750, it has been meticulously maintained ever since. From the bridge we will be transferred to our hotel in the nearby area and enjoy our dinner.
Day 4: Zagori villages Vradeto, Kapesovo
Ascent 100 m. Descent 100 m. Distance 4 km. Walking time 1 hour
Transfer to Vradeto (45 minutes). Vradeto is one of the highest villages of the Zagori region, It lies at a height of 1,340 m on Mt Tymfi. It is located only a few kilometers from Vikos Gorge and near one of the best vantage points, Beloe (Beloi) --perhaps a Slavic word meaning "good view". We will follow a short, accessible, and scenic trail that will lead us to one of Greece's most stunning views: the Vikos Gorge from above. Starting west of Vradeto village, the path heads east to the natural stone balcony of Beloi. The view is breathtaking, showcasing the vast gorge and sheer limestone cliffs—a wild landscape in all its natural splendor. We will return to Vradeto for snacking on traditional pies and quenching our thirst with local drinks and refreshments. We will later continue our descent to Kapesovo through Vradeto Steps.
Ascent 50 m. Descent 300 m. Distance 3.2 km. Walking time 1.5-2 hours
The spectacular stone staircase consists of 1,100 steps, spans 1,500 m., it has 39 bends and an altitude difference of 250 m. After descending the steps, we will reach the two old bridges, named Pera and Dothe, that were built exclusively for this path. After crossing those two bridges, we will go uphill to the village Kapesovo located at an altitude of 1,120 m. We will go to our hotel in Kapesovo or we will be transferred to a hotel in the nearby area and enjoy our dinner.
Day 5: Tzoumerka mountain
Ascent 450 m. Descent 450 m. Distance 7 km. Walking time 3:30 hours
Transfer to Tzoumerka (2:15). Discover the untamed beauty of this mountainous paradise, from scenic trails to pristine transparent water rivers and waterfalls. Depending on your physical fitness and preferences we could visit many traditional villages like Kalarites, Pramanta and Melissourgoi, beautiful waterfalls like Quiasa and Kefalovriso, the Anemotripa cave and the Kipina monastery that is nested in a cave located on a steep cliff.
Our suggested hike is between the mountain huts of Pramanta and Melissourgoi or a smaller 1 hour hike in Quiasa, by Kallaritikos river where we could also dive in the cold refreshing water in a natural pool. We will continue on to our hotel before or after enjoying our dinner at a traditional tavern or mountain hut.
Day 6: Aherons River and Parga town
Ascent 50 m. Descent 50 m. Distance 5 km. Walking time 3.5 hours
Transfer to Gliki, Acheron river (2:15). The Acheron springs, a hidden gem in the Souli mountains, draw visitors worldwide with their transparent green-blue waters flowing through lush, oak-covered hills. Known in Greek mythology as the "river of woe," Acheron was where Hermes handed souls to Charon for their journey to the Underworld.
We will access the springs after taking a 10-minute forest walk to the river. Waterproof bags and water shoes are recommended, as exploring upstream requires wading against a current. The water near the springs is icy, warming further up. This is a river trekking activity. Most of the river can be walked, with a couple stretches requiring swimming. This one of a kind experience will take us 3 hours to complete. We could enjoy a lunch break and continue our trip to the coastal town of Parga.
Parga is the top holiday destination in Epirus, with its seaside scenery and colorful town architecture reminiscent of the Greek islands. The Venetian castle stands out immediately, offering stunning sea views and lush greenery. You’ll also find beaches with a distinctly exotic feel. After visiting the town we can enjoy our dinner and later head towards our hotel.

TRAVEL TO EPIRUS
The trip starts from Athens, Thessaloniki or Ioannina city depending on the flight or drive option you choose. The three cities have airports however Ioannina airport is usually used for transfers within Greece. It takes 5 hours to arrive by bus from either airport to Ioannina.
The treks start at about one hour distance from the city of Ioannina. There is a daily bus connection of Athens and Thessaloniki with Ioannina. We can help you plan the route from the airport and provide you with bus schedules or arrange a car/minivan transfer: please contact us before you buy plane tickets.
CLOTHING AND GEAR
Proper hiking boots are necessary for the mountains. We recommend flexible boots because they support the ankle better than any low sneakers and provide better stability on a rocky terrain. Even in the middle of the summer in Epirus you must bring some warm clothes. Waterproof / windproof jacket, fleece, long hiking pants, sweat permeable t-shirts (synthetic or merino wool), sunglasses and a cap are recommended. A raincoat, poncho or other type of rainwear is necessary. Other necessary items are the toiletries, light clean footwear to use in the villages, at least 1 one-liter bottle for water.
ACCOMMODATION
Depending on your arrival time to Ioannina city, the first and last nights of your trip may be in one of the hotels near the cities. While hiking, you will stay overnight in the traditional local hotels. You can count on the following services in the villages: a bed in a shared room or in a private room (must be booked in advance), shower with hot water, toilets, We will advise you in advance for the possibility to buy medicines or snacks such as sandwiches and chocolate. Such items can be found in the bigger cities or Konitsa. For detailed information on the hotels or special preferences please read their webpages or contact us.
MEALS
In village to village hiking tours you are served a breakfast. Dinner is available to the traditional taverns in the area. Normally, the breakfast is served from 7am to 9am. It usually includes an unlimited quantity of coffee and tea, bread, butter, jam, eggs, honey and chocolate spread. In addition, some huts offer ham, cheese and local pies for breakfast. After breakfast we recommend filling your thermos with hot water or tea: ask the staff, and it will be for free in most hotels.
The dinner time in the villages is typically 6 pm to 11:00 pm. A typical dinner in a village is very rich and includes a salad as a starter, appetizers (such as tzatziki, cheese-crem, fried local cheese), the main course (meat with a side dish or vegetables) and a dessert. Any drinks at dinner (water, wine, beer, local tsipouro, herbal tea, coffee) are also available.
Lunch. It is possible to stop for lunch in a tavern or on the route on most days of the trek. Typically, dinners cost 15 – 30 euros.
SAFETY MATTERS
Our hiking tours are led by professional mountain leaders, each with years of guiding and wilderness experience and with passion for the outdoors. They usually work in the region of the hiking trip, have professional training, are trained for emergency situations, regularly upgrade their qualifications and work in accordance with Greek regulations.
In cases of self-guided hiking, you must be properly dressed, follow the safety rules and make realistic time calculations for daily crossings – preferably according to the hiking guidelines that we provide. Our self-guided hiking trips are organized so that they do not require specific abilities and skills or gear, unless it is clearly specified in the trip description. You can expect not so well maintained trails like the ones in the Alps or in N, Europe or N. America, however, equipped with direction signs. Exposed sections of the paths may not be secured on the self-guided routes. However they are considered safe provided that you follow the basic safety rules for hiking in the mountains. We will give you any necessary information.
Mountains are a natural environment with a high level of risk, so we insistently ask all guests to engage into activities according to skill and fitness level. If you have questions about the safety rules, please contact us.
INSURANCE
It is important to have an appropriate insurance that covers the hiking activity. You don't need to include the climbing activity in your insurance, unless you are planning to climb during the hike. However, it is important to mention that there is no HEMS in Greece. We mostly depend on the state operated EMAK service (Joint Rescue Coordination Service) which is not as quick and efficient as rescue operations abroad.
